Shakespeare! (and writing)

Well, I have nothing to do.

Well, technically I do. I could be doing Earth-Space homework. I could be working on my prom dress (I finished the front of it this morning! SIKE!). I could be doing calculus. But I'm choosing to blog instead, because I can. Also, because I'm thoroughly incapable of getting a significant amount of calculus done in half an hour, which is all the time that I have before lunch. I'll get to it later, now that I probably don't have a film shoot later today.

This morning, during one of my other free blocks, I decided to look up some Shakespearean settings. Why?

Remember my NaNoWriMo novel last year, the one about the girl who was named Romeo and all the characters were named after Shakespearean people and stuff?

I'm working on building up that world, and because of that, I decided I needed a map of Mercanova, the country where it's set. And, following in the whole everything-except-the-country-and-the-novel's-title-is-derived-from-Shakespeare vein, I decided to name all the cities, rivers, seas, forests, towns, and mountain ranges after Shakespearean locations (which are also real locations, technically, but whatever).

So, for example, the capital city is Verona, the main setting of "Romeo and Juliet" (since my MC is Romeo, I felt obliged). Puck goes to Mantua as part of his back-story, when he is unofficially banished from his faerie tribe (as Romeo Montague was). There's Wizard Island, where banished wizards are sent (Prospero and kind of Belarius), which is in the middle of a sea that I forget the name of that forms the Eastern border. Romeo, Demetrius, and Puck meet Belarius/ Morgan in the Forest of Arden, from "As You Like It." The castle name is Elsinore (and the King and Queen are Hamlet and Ophelia). The Roma Mountains form the Western border (derived from Rome, where a good third of Shakespearean shows are set); the Athenian Forest ("Midsummer") is to the south. There are a scattering of other cities and towns as well, but I don't remember the names of all of them. Several of the rivers have names as well, but I don't feel like pulling out my notebook and recalling what they are. I'll figure that out later.

Unfortunately, Shakespeare did not have a location that might have been labeled "here be dragons," so I just wrote "here be dragons" until I can figure out something more apt.

So that's what's happening right now.

Also, remember my NaNoWriMo novel two years ago? The one based off of a video game and had a knight and stuff?

I just picked that up to start writing it again.

Right. I must be off. I have stuff to attend to. Like writing.

And world-building.

And homework.

Well, this is kind of boring.  I only had two classes today, and I have already done most of my homework.

I cannot do all of it, because the government textbook apparently vanished from the library before Spring Break, and it has not shown up yet.  And I do not really feel like reading "The Crucible."

I cannot leave, because I am helping with a film shoot during the last block of the day (which I have free and during which our directors have film).

But I HAVE done my calculus homework, which is awesome, because I actually remembered what I was supposed to be doing for it.  YAY!

And I did read ONE act of "The Crucible."  I just do not feel like reading the last act, even though it is really short.

Also, I forgot my knitting today, which is kind of disappointing, because I would be more willing to read for homework if I was knitting and reading at the same time, because I am weird like that.  Also, because that is how I am going to try to avoid being a broke college student in the fall - by selling hand-knit stuff.

I just have to build up a stock of bags and stuff, since summer is nigh and nobody wants to buy a hat in the middle of the summer.  Unless they are moving to Scandinavia or going on a scientific mission to Antarctica or climbing Mount Everest (in which case they will probably buy fifty-dollar synthetic-fleece hats because they are less likely to absorb water and get really annoying than a knit hat would).

Anyhow, if you know me, and you want to buy something, I can custom-knit hats, scarves, bags, and gloves; I am working on developing patterns for vests and prom dresses.  Soooooo let me know.  Yeah.  I do NOT shy away from the ridiculous types of patterns, like those hats with ears on them and stuff.  If you give me an image of something and ask that it be knit onto a hat or something, I will probably be able to figure out an intarsia for it.

Yes, I am that weird.

Anyhow, I should be going.  "The Crucible," even though I had to read it last year for English as well, awaits me.  Even though I don't really feel like reading it.

knitting, wool, and legality

Well, it's my birthday. HUZZAH! Since I'm now a legal adult, I can legally do whatever I bloody well want. HUZZAH!

Well, except drinking. But I haven't done that yet anyway, so whatever.

And rent cars. But that doesn't really matter, since I don't exactly have a full license yet.

And a lot more stuff that I probably have not heard.


But I can join the army (which, I must admit, isn't very appealing), smoke (which isn't appealing either, since the Creed of Singers, Actors, Semi-Athletes, and People Who Don't Want To Die of Lung Cancer forbids it), and vote (which is probably the only thing I'm now legally allowed to do that I'll probably wind up doing).

So far, for my birthday I have gotten a book (which is really good), and some writing, and a bracelet, and "Downton Abbey" (WOOHOO!), and a Super Mario poster, and the foreshadowing of a head cold. I may also be getting Indiana Jones; I'm not entirely sure. And by "Indiana Jones," I mean the original trilogy, which I've been meaning to watch for the last year and a half, but have been prevented by the lack of availability on Netflix and Amazon Instant whenever I had the time to watch any of them.

During Senior Project,s I'm probably going to wind up watching and/ or reading of the stuff that my stuff is derived from, meaning that I'll be reading Lord of the Rings (and maybe watching the movies) when I knit the Legolas tunic, and watching Star Wars when I knit the Jedi tunic, and knitting and watching Indiana Jones and knitting and watching Pirates of the Caribbean. Yeah. For that, I am excited.

Speaking of Senior Projects, I finally got about half of the wool I'm going to need for it. Two of my models (Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings) will probably want to shoot me, because their things are going to be entirely wool (it's NICE wool, though, and the Indiana Jones one is hand-dyed), but whatever. I'll deal with that when I come to it.

And also talk to them at lunch today.

I still have a trip to take to Micheal's for the synthetic fibers for some of the smaller stuff (and for the bigger stuff for Pirates of the Caribbean and Star Wars), and then I will be fully prepared to take on the challenge that is my senior project. Huzzah!
