Not for the Life of Me-Thoroughly Modern Millie

MILLIE:
I studied all the pictures in magazines and books
I memorized the subway map too
It's one block north to Macy's and two to Brothers Brooks
Manhattan, I prepared for you

You certainly are diff'rent from what they have back home
Where nothing's over three stories high
And no one's in a hurry or wants to roam
But I do, though they wonder why

They said I would soon be good and lonely
They said I would sing the homesick blues
(taking a train ticket from her pocket)
So I always have this ticket in my pocket
A ticket home in my pocket
To do with as I choose

(tearing the ticket in two)
Burn the bridge, bet the store
Baby's coming home no more
Not for the life of me
Break the lock, post my bail
Done my time, I'm out of jail
Not for the life of me

A life that's gotta be more than a one-light town
Where the light is always red
Gotta be more than an old ghost town
Where the ghost ain't even dead

Clap-a-your hands, just-a-because
Don't you know that where I am ain't where I was
Not for the life of me
Boh-doh-dee-oh
Not for the life of
Not for the life of
Not for the life of me!

Well, it's the first song in the show. I guess I should start practicing, even though I'm probably not going to end up singing it, but whatever.
I wish my iTunes gift card hadn't run out.

musicals

I know it's been a while since I last posted. I'm going to try to do better, I swear. Anyway, I found out what our school musical is going to be- Thoroughly Modern Millie. I've never seen it. I've heard of it, but I've never seen it. It seems good.
Apparently, it's about this girl (Millie, obviously) who moves to New York from Kansas and gets a job and then gets offered a job as a stenographer or something. She intends to marry her boss because of her boss' money, but then she falls in love with this cynical go-back-to-Kansas sort of guy instead. And she bobs her hair and starts dressing like a flapper, because she can, and it's the 20's. Anyway, as I've never seen the show, I don't know what part I want.I kind of want to go for Millie, but, really, what girl isn't secretly wishing she could be the female lead in any show?
Anyway, as I haven't seen it, I don't know what part I want. I REFUSE to be part of the chorus. Again. Especially if it's the slutty chorus, like the Jet Girls in West Side Story. I was one of them. I do NOT want to be a backup singer for the entirety of my high school drama career. That would be very un-fun. I know I'm not going to be the LEAD, but I don't want to be the one doing jazz hands in the background. Or just singing. In the background. Because that would REALLY suck.
I want to at least be in the show, though.
I don't know what would be worse-being in the background through all of my high school acting career, or not being able to be in the show at all for the rest of high school.
I guess it would be better to be in the show, but still. West Side Story was HARD. We seriously at school from four until about nine thirty almost every night for the month preceding the show. And by month I mean two weeks. Every. Single. Day. And some weekends.
And we sometimes didn't even get out until ten.
The show ended up being awesome, I think, but I also think that that opinion is partially based on the fact that I was deranged from lack of sleep.
Okay, not deranged. But still.
It was hard.
That's the one downside of being in school musicals, I've found.
Even though I've only been in one school musical, and that was West Side Story. I've been in other musicals and plays and stuff, but only one audition-in school musical. West Side Story. You gotta love and hate it.

oh...

Oh yeah. And happy October.
Yay Halloween!

YAY FOR BLOWING STUFF UP!!

Well, I'm really bored right now. I probably should be studying my sonnet, but I don't really want to. So I'm not going to. It's only, like, the last three lines that are really annoying, anyway. Anyway, I'm sort of enjoying school right now, even though math is annoying and I have to wake up early for chemistry and sometimes the workload in every class is annoyingly epic, things are going all right. Especially this morning in chemistry. The teacher stuck a little hunk of lithium in a bowl of water, and it sort of fizzed a bit. But then he stuck a bigger hunk of sodium into a different bowl of water, and then after about fifteen seconds it exploded. Seriously. It sounded like a balloon was popping or something. It was SO AWESOME!! So, so far, the most important thing I've learned in chemistry is alkaline metals explode in water. Most of them, anyway. Except for lithium and hydrogen.
So, basically, a month into chemistry and we have already had our first explosion. That's really why I took chemistry in the first place. So I could blow stuff up. And other stuff, too. But mostly because it's chemistry and we get to blow stuff up. And blowing stuff up, that's pretty cool.
So that's my story.
The end.

Sonnet 133

Here is sonnet 133, by William Shakespeare. No, I did not type this up off the top of my head. I copied it off of spark notes. I do NOT want to think about that sonnet again until Thursday.

Beshrew that heart that makes my heart to groan
For that deep wound it gives my friend and me;
Is’t not enough to torture me alone,
But slave to slavery my sweet’st friend must be?
Me from myself thy cruel eye hath taken,
And my next self thou harder hast engrossed;
Of him, myself, and thee I am forsaken,
A torment thrice threefold thus to be crossed.
Prison my heart in thy steel bosom’s ward,
But then my friend’s heart let my poor heart bail.
Whoe'er keeps me, let my heart be his guard;
Thou canst not then use rigor in my jail.
And yet thou wilt, for I being pent in thee,
Perforce am thine, and all that is in me.

I. Hate. Sonnets.

I really hate sonnets. Especially Shakespearean sonnets. But, whadda ya know, my English teacher made each of us one. Great. And it was due today. I know I failed at the "write it down off book" because I could NOT remember the last three lines for my life. I could remember the last three WORDS, but not the last three LINES.
I guess was ahead of some of my friends, though. One thought it was due on Thursday, so she hadn't even picked one out until the block before. Two others knew what theirs were, and one sort of knew hers and one couldn't remember hers for her life. And those were HER words, not mine. So I guess I was ahead of at least some people, even though Sonnet 133 has to be the weirdestly worded sonnet in existence (and I KNOW that "weirdestly" is not a word, but I do not care). And ONLY William Shakespeare would come up with something like "Beshrew that heart that makes my heart to groan" and "And yet thou wilt, for I being pent in thee." ONLY Shakespeare. Not ONE other poet do I know of that can pull something like that off. ONLY him. I guess that's why so many people are like, "Shakespeare is such a great poet! YAY!" Why? Because you don't get anything he's saying, so therefore it must be profound? Not to a high schooler. Maybe not even to most adults does fifteenth-century-talk make ANY sense whatsoever. So BOO YA for being able to remember most of a sonnet.
But the rest of them need to go burn and die.

Renn Fest!!!!

Well, we went to the Renaissance Festival yesterday, and it was REALLY fun. I DID spend almost all of my budget, and yes, at least half of it was on food. But I DID get a really cool bodice for ten bucks, and at the store next door they were in the hundred-dollar range. Mind you, the store next door's bodices were quite a bit fancier. However, the bodice I got's just cooler because it hasn't got any crazy sort of Fleur-De-Lis-type fabric pattern or anything. It's just plain black with a few ribbons sewn onto it and ties on the shoulders. I like it. You can wear it as a vest, which is nice, or you could lace up the front and it'll look like you're wearing a corset, which is kind of cool.
I also got a really cool necklace. And we got our faces painted. Mine was a blue and black tribal sort of pattern that took up half my face. It looked really cool, even when I had to put my glasses back on. The thing went just below your eyebrow and on the bit of your nose right by your eye. I'm not sure what that's called.
We also did a huge photo op at the stockade, which is always loads of fun. The stockade is the place where you stick your head and your hands in the holes and look evil, because the stockade used to be a form of punishment, and you hang wooden signs around your neck with whatever your crime was. I decided that my crime was just being stupid. I don't really see how being stupid (well, it was 'fool' on the sign) is criminal, but whatever.
And we also *tried* to learn to juggle, but it didn't work out so well.
But, all in all, it was a pretty fun day.
And we took pictures with a whole ton of the actors who were like part of the King's court and stuff. And with Henry the VIII, of course.
It was REALLY fun.

YAY!!

So my friend got this ukulele, and it's officially the coolest thing ever. Her favorite song to play on it, I think, is Build Me Up Buttercup by I'm-not-sure-who. Anyhoo, here are the lyrics, because I LOVE that song. Even though it's really nerdy and all that jazz.

Why do you build me up (build me up) Buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin'
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) Buttercup, don't break my heart
"I'll be over at ten", you told me time and again
But you're late, I wait around and then
I went to the door, I can't take any more
It's not you, you let me down again
(Hey, hey, hey!) Baby, baby, try to find
(Hey, hey, hey!) A little time and I'll make you mine
(Hey, hey, hey!) I'll be home
I'll be beside the phone waiting for you
Ooo-oo-ooo, ooo-oo-ooo
Why do you build me up (build me up) Buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin'
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) Buttercup, don't break my heart
You were my toy but I could be the boy you adore
If you'd just let me know
Although you're untrue, I'm attracted to you all the more
Why do I need you so
(Hey, hey, hey!) Baby, baby, try to find
I need you, more than anyone, baby
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) Buttercup, don't break my heart

lunchtime post!

Well, I just got back from Creative Writing, and it was definitely one of the most fun classes I have ever had ever. We did one of those sentence story things, and it basically ended up being a variation on "the princess and the frog," except with a weird hawk - frog - dog - fuzzball thingy. And then she kissed him and then he had to go save her from a dragon because her parents have to be all proper about the whole cliche about getting married ONLY after you get saved by a handsome prince, and then they lived happily ever after. And she had a unibrow for most of the story. The first half of the story is kind of hard to explain, but basically the prince was a jerk and then his frog - hawk - dog - fuzzball minions beat him up because the princess fed him to her dog but it didn't work and then he grew radioactive tentacles because of some sort of radioactive something in the teeth of the dog. And then she saved him and then the unibrow went away and then she kissed him and then he turned into a prince and then he saved her from the dragon and blah blah blah and they lived happily ever after, the end. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!
It was really fun. We were all cracking up while we were making it up, because things are just funnier when they're happening, just because they're awesome like that. So that's my story from today.

YAY! A POST!

I know I haven't done an official post in a while. This is my excuse: I have gotten into journaling again (as in, a LOT more-I've been doing about 15 pages a day), and so, when I'm writing in my journal during my free blocks, doing homework at home, and doing other stuff the rest of the time, I have had barely any time to blog. That and the fact that I'm rarely on the computer now. I'm not sure why. It's probably all the homework. I hate homework.
But today was an early release, so I was able to get home WAY early and so I have WAY more time to do stuff than I do on most days, so I am WAY happy right now.
And my friends can come to the Renn Fest, which is pretty flippin awesome. Both the part about my friends coming and the part about going to the Renn Fest. And the part about the Renn Fest just being awesome.
The one we go to is in Maryland, and it's quite fun. Mind you, most of it's just endless shopping, but endless shopping is good for the economy, right? So who cares that we are probably going to blow out all our college funds and all the money that all three of us made over the summer? Okay, that would really stink if we did that, I admit. But you get the point, right? It's hard to have fun at the Rennaisance Festival if you DON'T spend at least twenty dollars in all while you're there. Mind you, it's hard NOT to spend at least twenty bucks while you're there.
Since I'm SO PSYCHED about the Renn Fest, HERE is the link. (you click on the "here." fyi.)
I'm going now. LATER!

Creative Writing Story

This is part of the story I'm working on in Creative Writing. I'm not done with it yet, which is why it's only part. So here it is.

I guess it all started with Dave's clarinet. I was fifteen, and we had gone camping-me, my dad, my mom, and my dad's best friend, Dave, and his daughter, Julie, who was my age, at the beginning of the summer after my freshman year in high school. Julie and I, we didn't exactly get along.
Dave had brought his clarinet that weekend. I'm not sure why. Anyway, near lunch time, Dave went out in the woods a little ways and started to play. Curious, I followed him. He walked deeper into the woods and I followed like a puppy, entranced by the music. Then he came to a clearing and sat down, still playing. I followed him and watched his fingers dance over the silver keys.
When he finally stopped, I asked, "Will you teach me?"
He tried to, but I was terrible at it. My fingers didn't fit the keys right, but I blew anyway. The sound that emerged was nothing like the sound that Dave had conjured from the tube. Dave's sound was flowing and beautiful; mine was loud, squeaky, and obnoxious. I tried again, to no avail. I was determined to get it, no matter how long it took.
However, Dave had other plans. He pulled the instrument out of my hands and said, in a ver annoyed tone, "Maybe we should try again another time." He stormed off, leaving me in the clearing alone.
For a little while, Iwas happy by myself in the clearing. Then a mounting panic began to rise in my chest. Where was our campsite? Where was my family? How would I get back to the tent? I began to cry quietly. A bear would probably eat me or something out here.
More time passed, and nobody came for me. I began to cry harder, blended with cuss words and tirades uttered under my breath. They had surely all forgotten about me, which, of course, was probably the entire point of the entire enterprise.
Dark began to fall. I finally forced myself to get up and move and try and make a shelter of some sort, so I didn't get eaten by anything.
Then I noticed a small flute by my left hand. I don't know how it got there. It was small and carved out of some sort of dark wood, with little flowers and vines carved on it. The middles of some of the flowers were hollow-the holes where you put your fingers.
I picked it up and blew on it. It made it a low sort of sound, kind of like an owl. I blew it again, and kept blowing. For some reason, this was a lot easier than playing clarinet. The flute seemed to fit my hands perfectly. I began to randomly put my fingers on and off the various holes, and somehow made a melody.
I don't know how long I stayed in the clearing, playing the flute. I just looked up at one point and saw two figures that were glowing slightly in the dark. I stopped playing and started getting scared again. Dark had really fallen now, and in addition, there were two eerily glowing figures in front of me. They looked like humans about my age-one was a boy, and one was a girl. Both had slanted, bottle green eyes and black hair.
"Well, it took you long enough," the boy said.
"Eohu, don't be rude," the girl scolded.
"Well, we've been here for a good hour and a half," Eohu complained. "Can we go now? I'm bored."
"No, dummy, we have to deliver the message," the girl chided.
I watched this interaction with confused amazement. These two figures were probably twins, but what did some creepy glowing pair want with me in a forest clearing in the dead of night?
"All right," Eohu sighed. "Hurry up."
"We have to do it properly," the girl insisted.
"Oh, all RIGHT," Eohu moaned.
"Lily," the girl addressed me, and I started. How did she know my name? "You have been bestowed with a flute that has certain powers. YOu have been brought to this clearing by our colleague, Dave. You need to hear some very important information."
"What?" I asked, curious.
"Okay, Lheada, enough with formality," Eohu said. "Basically, we're here to tell you that you're a fairy, and we need your help in saving the queen."
"WHAT?" I nearly yelled.
"See, I TOLD you we had to do it properly," Lheada told him.
"Hang on... what?" I asked, unable to take it in. Fairy? A queen? A fairy queen? What was going ON here? "Give it to me again, slowly."
Eohu groaned. "You... are... a... fairy," he said, as if I was both very deaf and very slow. "We... need... YOU... to... help... US."
"Are you fairies, too?" I asked.
"Yes," Lheada said.
"So why do you need me?" I wondered.
"Because you know stuff that we don't," she explained.
"Such as...?" I asked, still confused.
"Such as how to play that flute," Eohu interjected. "Only one person can play it."
"And since you grew up with humans, you can use logic," Lheada said.
"Not all humans can use logic," I said. "I'm terrible at it."
"But you also know certain types of defense that fairies never learn," Lheada explained. "Like how to beat people up with your fists and feet. We just use magic."
"Correction," Eohu interrupted. "I can use my fists and feet. You just use magic. I can fight just fine, thank you."
"And, so... why do you need me and my martial arts in order to save the queen?" I asked. "I defenitely can't wrestle trolls or beat up giants or anything."
"Trolls are over rated," Eohu said. "I nearly fought one once. And they're stupid as-"
"EOHU!" Lheada cut across him.
"What?" he protested.
"No cussing!" Lheada ordered.
"I wasn't going to!" Eohu complained.
"Yes, you were!" Lheada countered.
"Was not!"
"Were too!"
"Um..." I interjected tentatively, "Is this relevant?"
"Oh," Lheada said, returning to her poised state. "No, it isn't. Thank you for reminding us."

That's all I have time for right now. I'll be back in a bit to finish the rest.

oh, yeah.

And Saturday was Talk Like A Pirate Day.
And on Saturday, I got new shoes, and I had to give up the trusty Converses that I have had for the last two years and two months. The old ones were all drawn on and written on and geometry-formula-ified and colored in and fraying around the seam by the sole and everything, but the new ones are kind of nice. They're turquoise with layered yellow, pink, blue, yellow, purple, and pink, in that order, around the edges. And pinky purple laces. And they're freaking new. It's going to take a while to get used to them. But, on the other hand, I have another two years and two months (probably more) to write lyrics and algebra/ precalculus/ trigonometry (maybe) formulas on the toes and runes and mazes on the inside of the foot and color in the crosshatch thingies on the way front of the toes.
And, on Saturday (again), I got yarn. YAY YARN!!!!!!!
Needles + yarn + pencils + paper = my entire life so far.
I am NOT kidding.
And on Saturday night, me and my mom and our neighbor and her dog went up to the basketball court on the elementary school near our house and looked at the stars. It was quite fun, actually.
But, on Sunday, I had to acolyte. It was okay. All the candles got lit fine. And then I had to work. Which wasn't fun. Not really, anyway. Which means, of course, I couldn't journal and do all the stuff I like to do. Which means, of course, I wasn't all that happy when I was working, because of not being able to do anything fun. I am DEFENITELY not working at the pool next summer. Except for the part when I got paid many hundreds of dollars on my last paycheck.
I gotta go now, though.
